Skeptics in the pub, Syracuse

By the way, Eva and I went to the inagural Syracuse edition of Skeptics in the Pub on Tuesday, and it was really great. Very nice people, good conversation. I should really go to more of their lectures, but you know how it is at the end of the day, you kind of go....eh. I have this problem with the CNYAPG lectures, too. Anyway, I'll post here when there's another one (probably next month) and anyone around should stop by!

Further thoughts on Say Anything

Ok, as some of you folks might know, Joelster and I were disagreeing about whether the boombox scene in Say Anything can stand alone as just a great scene from a movie, or whether you need to actually see the movie and be invested in the characters for it to work. Most of the folks I texted replied that the scene stands alone, and I agree. I think a lot of why the scene works is that the lyrics to the Peter Gabriel song go so well*. But also a lot of it is John Cusack. His face as he's standing there really conveys the sense that this is his last, desparate, million to one chance to win this girl back, and frankly I really don't think you need to know more than that to find this scene so remarkable. And of course, because I likes you all, here you go:

*According to the commentary on the DVD (I don't own this but saw one of those shows on some channel where they played the DVD commentary), they were originally going to use some random Fishbone song there, but at the last minute someone had heard this song and knew it would be perfect.

And to lighten the mood, I give you this.

No suprise here, I've been obsessed with Wonder Woman since I was a wee thing. I even dressed up as Wonder Woman for Halloween once, and my mom made a KICK ASS costume! AND I got to wear LIPSTICK! Sweet.
